In a world where ESG practices are increasingly important for organizations, it is impossible to think of a future where leaders are not involved with this issue.

ESG leadership development matrix

Here at Now Sustainability we have developed the ESG leadership development matrix to help any organization map and assist in the development of its leaders and employees.

So let me show you the 3 steps we use here to create this leadership development matrix:

Step 1 – Survey of managers and potential leaders

The idea here is to create a list of people in management positions and others who are not yet in those positions, but have the aspiration or potential to take on such a role in the future.

You can do this in a simple table and the idea is to have a table with the names of employees and their current positions and areas.

Step 2 – Assessment of leadership potential and engagement with ESG

Now, for each of the employees on the list, evaluate whether their leadership potential (LP) is low, medium or high and whether their involvement with ESG (IE) is low, medium or high. This will generate a position in the array:

LP = Low and IE = Low – Uninterested
LP = Low and IE = Medium – Knowledgeable
LP = Low and IE = High – Technical Potential
LP = Medium and IE = Low – Contestable
LP = Medium and IE = Medium – Interested
LP = Medium and IE = High – Multiplier
LP = High and IE = Low – Denier Leader
LP = High and IE = Medium – Leading Potential
LP = High and IE = High – ESG Talent

Step 3 – Development Plan

Regardless of where each employee is in the ESG leadership development matrix, the ideal is to create a development plan aligned with their expectations and what the company expects from them.

To do this, create an evaluation, monitoring and feedback structure based on behaviors and skills that you hope to develop in them.

The most important thing at the end of the day is to make sure the right people are in the right positions.

Tell me in the comments if you have had problems dealing with a denialist and/or disinterested leader and also if you have had the pleasure of meeting ESG talents and potential ESG leaders in your organization or projects you have carried out.
